    Program Description:

Did you know that you have your own leadership style, and that you inspire others when you are operating at your highest and best level?

While you may or may not officially hold the leadership title or position, your work and your life call on you to bring your leadership skills, and yes, your leadership excellence to the surface to make decisions, implement those into action, while affecting the lives of those around you.

We all have our own leadership style, and yours shows how you are able to communicate with, build trust with, influence, inspire, and lead others.

This interactive program has a theatre twist … along with the course material delivered by your presenter, professional actors will perform in leadership skits, giving you the opportunity to experience and learn leadership principles through live, interactive theatre.

    You will learn:

    • How to recognize and improve your own leadership style while identifying and understanding the styles of others
    • How to utilize your adaptability when dealing with other personalities and situations to be an effective leader
    • What leadership components work best to impact those with whom you work

    About Your Presenter:

Karen Galvin founded Vision Enterprises in 1994, after working in sales, management, and training positions at The Boston Five Mortgage Corporation, Prime Financial Corporation, and Phoenix Home Life Insurance Company.

She consults with numerous corporations, not-for-profits, and government agencies. She has trained thousands of professionals worldwide in leadership, sales, team development, and communication skills in her dynamic, engaging and entertaining style.

Karen's passion for live theatre and her background in both acting and directing are what drove the creation and success of the theatre-based training component of Vision Enterprises. Instead of showing a training video, professional actors and actresses perform in training skits. Trainees are entertained while they are trained, and have the opportunity to interact with and practice new skills with actors before returning to the workplace.

Everything you always wanted to ask an orthopaedic surgeon, (but couldn’t get them on the phone)

The 2010’s are the decade of integrated or collaborative medicine. Unfortunately this concept has not extended to the injured worker. Orthopaedic surgeons, a major player in the delivery of care, often view the system with hostility and contempt.

This workshop will provide insight into the surgeon’s mind. Better understand why the provider expects all of his/her recommendations to be accommodated. Learn why they are so hard to reach and discover strategies to overcome these obstacles.

Michael P Nancollas, MD is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon with a subspecialty certification in hand and upper extremity surgeon. He has been in private practice for over 25 years originally in New York State and now in Massachusetts. With no formal training during his residency in treated the injured worker, he has made a point of gaining knowledge through meetings with claims examiners and worker’s compensation attorneys.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN CLAIM-RELATED DECISIONS END UP IN LITIGATION?

This panel presentation will offer a legal perspective concerning claim-related decisions and will discuss the typical evolution of a lawsuit and how claim representatives may be involved and/or consulted in the context of such litigation.

This session will also offer an overview of the discovery process, including how internal claim documentation may end up in the hands of a plaintiff's lawyer and best practices for depositions.

Takeaways: Attendees will gain a sense of what litigation over a claim denial looks like and will gain insight on how their actions and file documents could end up before a court.

Exploring Social Media & Internet Investigations

Prior to the internet, claim professionals relied on court records, print books, periodicals, magazines and other references to retrieve the slightest nugget of information. Today, the internet is one of the most valuable tools used in procuring information. According to PEW, 87% of the US population utilizes the internet. Additionally, Facebook boasts 1.8B users globally, with 214M residing in the United States. Claim professionals are oftentimes expected to understand searching protocols without actual guidance. For those who do not practice this skill on a daily basis, search methods can become overwhelming. In this session we attempt to make sense of one of the most confusing, time-consuming, and frustrating tools known to a claims professional.., the internet.

    March 4, 2020

    Friends and Colleagues,

It is with deepest regret to inform you, after a vote from the Board, that we have decided to cancel the March 19, 2020 Conference in Windsor, CT in light of the unprecedented Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation.

As you are aware, the COVID-19 virus is of current concern and we have the safety and well-being of our attendees in the forefront of our minds.  Several of our member companies have already restricted travel and conference attendance for our attendees.   While we hope that this advanced preparation is, in the end, excessive caution, we want to be sure that we are making the best decision for our organization and our members in a timely fashion.

If you have already registered, we will cancel your registration and you will not be billed.  If you have paid by PayPal, we will be processing refunds in the immediate future.  Fortunately, our venue, the Hilton Garden Inn, has a penalty free cancellation policy for cancellations due to the coronavirus.  We appreciate their understanding and look forward to the opportunity to host future conferences at their facility in Windsor, CT.

Our annual Legal Year in Review will be May 7, 2020 at the Beechwood Inn in Worcester, MA.  We hope that you all can join us. This is also when we will vote in our 2020-2021 Board members. This is a great opportunity for you to consider how you may contribute to our Board or Executive Committee in the next year.  It has been a rewarding experience and is a great opportunity to learn new skills, build relationships with industry colleagues and have a hand in our conference format and content for the coming year.  If have any questions on how you may contribute to the future of NECA please feel free to contact me or any other board member.

The Board appreciates your patience and understanding in this unprecedented situation.  We wish you and your family good health and look forward to seeing you in May 2020!

    Sincerely,

    Tricia Berube, ALHC

We are excited to announce that the kick-off event will take place on Thursday, November 10, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. EST via Zoom.  This will be a virtual presentation hosted by our vendor partner, Integrated Benefits, Inc.  Links to attend the event will be sent to registered attendees 24-hours in advance.

The kick-off event will be focused on the exciting topic of technology!

SESSION #1: Solving Examiner and Adjuster Pain Points with Automation and AI

    Session Description:

The job of a claim examiner or adjuster in the digital age is challenging, and a calendar-based claims review process often causes actions too early or too late. Exponentially growing volumes of data from multiple sources – especially complex medical information in unstructured notes – creates a big data problem. And the ever-increasing caseload that each examiner or adjuster must handle further exacerbates this difficulty.

Forward-thinking carriers and TPAs are now deploying intelligent digital automation to capture and validate critical data and create automated claim triage pathways more efficiently. Simultaneously, next-generation artificial intelligence allows carriers to dramatically reduce claim durations and losses by guiding examiners and adjusters to prioritize the most actionable claims daily.

Join technology experts Carl Capato, Senior Vice President of FastTrack, and Michael Saltzman, COO, and co-founder of EvolutionIQ, as they discuss the utilization of digital automation throughout the claims journey and artificial intelligence (AI) that delivers the “right claim at the right time” while providing valuable guidance that leads to well-informed, consistent risk management adjudication.

    Speakers:

Carl Capato, SVP of Digital Automation Solutions & Services, FastTrack

Michael Saltzman, Chief Operating Officer, EvolutionIQ

SESSION #2: The Future of Tech in the Insurance Industry

    Session Description:

In this session, we will explore the evolution of technology solutions in the life and disability insurance market. We will highlight recent innovative solutions and tackle the challenges that carriers often run into. Finally, we will discuss the top 4-5 things insurance business leaders should consider when embarking on the innovation journey. We hope this will be an interactive session and there will be plenty of time for questions at the end of the session.

This event will focus on Employee Burnout!

    SESSION TITLE:

When is Netflix better without pizza? When you’re trying to cure or counteract Z73.0 (Employee Burnout).

    Session Description:

How much do you really know about Employee Burnout? It’s more than just a feeling of being overwhelmed- it’s a real diagnosis and its effect is more far-reaching than may be imagined. It affects the deskless and disconnected, the home-bound, the hybrid and the in-person/on-site employee. It affects executives, leaders and front-line workers alike, but not all in the same way. Join our panel to learn more about the causes of this condition, to discuss potential cures (hint: pizza parties are no longer the answer) and to learn how companies can counteract burnout. We’ll also have time for attendees to share their thoughts, ideas and questions about how burnout in the workspace has impacted them or their team.

    Speakers:

    Erika Gero, LTD Manager, Symetra

Erika joins us from Symetra where she manages a team of LTD case managers. She has 7 years of experience in the group disability space managing Short Term, Statutory, and Long Term Disability claims prior to assuming a leadership role.  Before joining the industry, Erika received her undergraduate degree from the University of Rhode Island and managed a small business for 10 years where she found her passion for coaching and developing others. In her current role, she has a strong focus on employee engagement and believes that overall job satisfaction is a key factor in preventing burnout during challenging times.

Sophia Horsman is a Senior Disability Claim Consultant with The Standard who’s spent 30 years in the Individual Disability claim industry.  She’s worked on the direct side and in reinsurance and held leadership roles throughout her tenure.  In her experience, she finds the most difficult employee to deal with is when she’s managing herself.

Caitlin Brady, MSPH, Firstup Strategy Advisor

After spending nearly a decade in the corporate setting, Caitlin knows that data-driven communication has the power to drive business outcomes – like engagement, retention, productivity and absenteeism.
